Pulley's
You also have to look at the strength of the pulleys, its ok putting a centre main strap on and then skimping on the pulleys, turning your freshly but power unit into a pile of scrap because the standard cam pulley let go Not worth thinking about

Pulley change
Changing the pulley sounds like the way forward, if the voltage is ok @ higher revs the changing the pulley will sort this. I do not know of an alternator fault that can cause your problem, its sounds like its spining too slowly to me. On the other hand it may not be a problem as when you are driving it will be charging ok anyway.

Cranky Pulley wobble
1990 RSP cooper A+
the crank pulley visably wobbles about accompanied by a metalic shingging noise which i presume is it rubbing on the timing case. are these pulleys rubber isolated? in which case i presume the rubber has broken down causing the puley to wobble around.
or is something else wrong?
pulley appears to be tight, and i cant move it by hand.

there is a rubber crank damper on the end that i think is part of pully. iv not heard of them breaking down to that degree but i gess if somone spilt something like brake fluid on it it may break down a lot. there about £50 for a new one i think, cant see what else it could be if bolts are tight. can u feel play in it?.

i cant feel play in it but in order to get a proper look i'll have to take all the rad out ect!
i cant for the life of me find a standard a+ crank pulley for sale however! only toothed ones or S copys!
so if the pulley is knackered when i get it off what do i do!

Purchase another, and change the seals on the timing chaing whilst you are there.
bottom pulleys use to fall off earlier a+ engines on metro's
I have never used a puller to remove the bottom pulley though!

Fanbelt pulley Removal
Can anyone help with information on how to remove the top fan belt pulley as i have tried to take the fan off, but got nowhere with a socket set or a spanner, so I have gone at it with an air powered socket set and it has sheared the bolts.
Therefore I need to remove the top pulley (the one directly below the thermostat) to clear these holes, any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Rob

What type of mini andyear do you have? if its an older mini and you mean the pully on the waterpump with the fan attached you will have to remove the water pump and to make things easier you can take the radiator out to.

The year of the car is 1987, and the model is a Cooper, with a 1275cc A+ engine, i believe it is the pulley below the water pump and not the thermostat (sorry), i have uploaded the image to help as the engine is currently out of the car, sat on a trolley at the back of the garage.
The picture shows the fan is off, but the pulley and spacer still attached to the engine.

Sorry, the picture seems not to have worked, I will try it this way,

If it is the pully that the fan was on that drives the water pump and if the bolts are broken than just take the whole water pump off, if the motor is out that it shoulnt be a problem, the thearmostat sits on top of the head and has nothing to do with the pully system, If you look at this picture you will see the 4 bolts that broke off on your pully, that is where your fan goes, than if you take the complete water pump out you can drill out the studs replace them and you can reasemble. good luck

Thanks for your advice, i shall give it a shot and let you know how i go on

You said to remove the water pump, but what part is the thing between the pump and the place where the bolts are?Is it some sort of spacer?or pulley?
Posted: Mar 23, 2008 09:23 PM
if you are talking about where the bolts go into as in the part that is permently attached to the water pump that is where the actual pully sits on and there are also spacers after the pully that are there to space your fan from your cooler evenly. if that helps
cheers

Well i am looking to replace the water pump. but its proving difficult to find a pump with that pulley on, i can buy a product from mini spares that is similar but its not a direct part of the pump. Iv been reading around and it may be some sort of device that reduces horsepower drain when driving the fan, but i cant buy a pump already set up like this.
Regards,

The pump and the pully are 2 different pieces the pully bolts to the pump and than the fan bolts to both of them

if you look at this link from limora it will show you a picture of howit all goes together, and it will have nothing to do with your horsepower its only the cooling sytem, it does give other water pumps for more water flow and so forth but unless you have an extreme setup you will not find it nessesary to upgrade the waterpump.
hope this helps

Oversized water pulley?
The cone on my water pump measures 34mm, however there is then a spacer that is 12mm deep, causing a total distance of 46mm. The small spacer on the end of the pulley seems to be a home-made one as there are several saw cuts on the lip. This pulley is fitted to a 1275 cc A+ engine, however i also have another mini that is a 998cc, but the pulley doesnt have this extra spacer, does anybody know the reason behind this extra (what looks to be home-made) spacer?
Kindest regards
