inertia flywheel to A+ crank
Does anyone know if it is possible to fit an inertia type flywheel and clutch system to a 1275 A+ engine if the starter is replaced at the same time. This also means that a remote solenoid is required I presume? Will it fit the crank taper?,Does it matter what size motor the flywheel came off? Is it easier to change the ring-gear, if they are interchangable?

Inertia flywheel to A+ crank
First off - the pre-engaged starter can be retained wit hthe Inertia/pre-Verto type flywheel. Us racers used this very early on when the Metro first appeared with them on. It spins the motor over faster at start-up. It makes a bit more noise as the ring gear teeth are not perfectly matched - but it works well enough. If the flyhweel has the older/original thick ring gear you may have to space the starter motor away from the casing using a couple of washers between the starter motor and the clutch casing. The issue with the swap is the clutch opearting mechanism. The two are not (easily) interchangeable. You need to fit ALL the relevant components. See my Corner for deatils on this. KC.

ive put an mg metro engine in my mini, and realised the incompatiability of the starter motor.
will the inertia type starter cause too much damage?
can you help?

inertia starter to pre engaged
i tried search but could not find quite what i need so here goes:
I have a 1985 ritz that i have taken the engine out of and am putting in an engine from a 1990 cooper (1275) The old engine had an inertia starter. The new has a pre engaged starter.
What i need to know is: If the solinoid on the inner wing is the correct one to keep for the new starter, do i have to change it for another, or do i have to change any wiring to make it work?
I have kept the old cooper loom incase. Any ideas appricated. Thanks

The pre-engaged starter shouldn't need a solenoid at all. You wire the live battery cable to the big connector with a nut on it, and the feed from the ignition switch to the small spade connector. Then there's a large spade connector which is a take-off for the rest of the electrics.
Basically, you just need to move the wires from the old solenoid to the back of the starter.
However, if the wires aren't long enough you may find it easier to keep the old solenoid where it is, and run new wires from the solenoid to the starter.

SEAT BELT REAR INERTIA( AUTO )BLACK
No the inertia rear seat belts got fitted to later post 1996 Minis and some modification would be required to get those belts to fit to earlier models.
The inertia reels are mounted inside the rear companion boxes (door bins) for a start.

Pre-engaged Starter or Inertia type ????
So how would I know if I have a pre-engaged or inertia type starter just by looking at the engine? Is there something I need to remove?

Rear inertia reel seatbelts
I want to fit rear inertia reel seat belts to replace the static ones but am not sure where to mount the reel. Can I mount it to the inside of the rear wheel arch in the pocket or do I need to fit it in the boot and cut a slot in the parcel shelf? Any advice greatly appreciated please.

Help! spi fuel problems
Glad you found it or I would have suggested the inertia fuel pump cut out switch. sometimes i hit bumps hard and the engine cuts out. also found on one spi that the inertia switch was unplugged and bridged witha paperclip which was only dicovered when it wouldn't start one day and found the paperclip rusted through!!

Tooth count time
Pre-engaged flyhweels have 129-tooth ring gears. Inertia ones have 107 teeth. KC

Re
You have the wrong amount of teeth on the flywheels ring gear. Pre engaged use 129 teeth and inertia use 107 teeth.

Starter motor - old/new type question
Hi I have searched through old topics, but can’t find an answer of my question, so here we go: Currently I have an inertia starter fitted (and it is possible to start engine), but I have been wondering if that is correct. Engine is a tuned A+ in none standard trim and I have not build it my self so I do not know what flywheel/ring-gear is fitted. I believe I have a verto clutch and engine is indeed A+ from MG Metro (car is Clubman from 1976). How to find out what ring-gear I have? And is it actually possible to use a starter motor inertia type on a verto type flywheel? Thanks in advance. /Claus

flywheel change
easier to get an inertia starter, why change to a pre-engaged one anyway? loads of hassle to change the flywheel with the engine in the car and you should be able to get an inertia starter motor for about £35. Also the wiring for the pre-engaged one is different due to the solonoid being on top of it rather than on the inner wing. Rob

crunching starter
Which type of starter is it? pre engauged or inertia. On both types remove the starter and check that the bendix drive is able to move freely on the shaft. They often bind with a build up of clutch friction lining dust. The grinding noise will the bendix still being in mesh with the flywheel once the engine as fired, it should normally be flung out.
