What Mini are we talking about here Mark, carburettor or fuel injection?
Posted: Oct 20, 2007 12:17 PM
hi its a cooper 1995 1.3i believe from what i have been told and read its a spi as radiator on side and has auxiliary fan.

Yes Mark it's an SPi and I believe the temperature sender will be located in a different position to that of a carburettor equipped car? Either way this is the unit you need to be looking for: -

As J. Clarke said, you only shorted the auxilliary cooling fan wiring when you connected those spade terminals together from the lower/front of your radiator. So with the ignition on, your auxilliary cooling fan should have switched on?
When you tried shorting the connections at the petrol tank, did you connect both the wires together with a safely pin and then switched on the ignition before checking the gauge?

Electronic Oil Pressure gauge question?
Hi, I have a mini clubman and would like to fit an Oil Pressure gauge. If I pick an electronic one, can I use the existing pressure sender? If not and I use the one with the gauge, will I have any issues with the oil pressure warning light?
Cheers Roberto

Temperature Gauge
I have installed Temperature gauge 13H4460MG in my 1963 850 mini. Is it possible to tune the gauge to the sender unit? Currently the gauge is showing hot when the actual temperature is normal.

Are you running the gauge from the voltage stabiliser? If you run it from the full 12v supply it will read high.

Speedo mile gauge.
I have a 1966 Australian 850cc Mini (now 1275cc) and the mile gauge has stopped working. Otherwise, the speedo is good .. needle registering correctly and gas gauge accurate. I've tried two instrument repair specialists - one here in Canada, and one in the US - but both say repairs cannot be made. I realize that new, complete instruments can be sourced, but I'd rather stick with the original, and repair if possible. Any suggestions would be most welcome .. have others solved this problem, and if so, how?

If you're lucky, it's just the mechanism has seized up and you can free it up quite easily with a little WD40 or similar. Otherwise, it could be a stripped cog wheel and you'll have no choice but to get a used replacement

Thanks, Tim. I'll have a try with WD40 and see how it goes. Just have to pluck up the courage to partially dismantle the gauge!
Cheers! Simon.

They're really very simple and don't need much dismantling, though I think you may need to pull the needle off to get at things - just make sure you mark the relative positions of the needle and the rotating disc before you do. You can test it whilst dismantled by inserting an electric drill with a suitably sized drill bit into the drive shaft

Petrol Gauge
Hello
1993 L Reg SPI Cooper
My petrol gauge was working
Now it isn't
The temp gauge is fine
I've bought a new sender
The petrol gauge is still not working
The temp gauge is still fine
Any suggestions?
Thanks

There's two things you can do to test the fuel gauge.
First, disconnect the two wires from the sender at the fuel tank. With the ignition switched on, touch the two wires together whilst watching the fuel gauge. Does the gauge move? If not, it strongly suggests a break in the wiring (or a broken gauge, but that's not very likely)
If the gauge does move, it suggests a faulty sender. If you remove it from the tank you can test it with a multimeter. Just measure the resistance between the two connections, and see if it changes as you move the float up and down. If it doesn't, then the sender is faulty.

‘92 Rover Mini Oil Pressure Gauge
I’ve a ‘92 Rover Mini, 1.3L manual, but will be away from it for a few months. Quick question - anyone know if the oil pressure gauge is electric or piped?
Thanks!
Pat

Assuming you have the standard set of instruments, it will be an electrical gauge.
