Speedo Calibration
There are a couple of methods. The one I used when having my recalibrated is by having an exact known measured distance of say 10 miles. Travel it first with a car that you trust the speedo/odometer reading. You then travel that distance again and see what you end up with. Say it is 8.5 miles. By then calculating the difference, they ( the speedo shop) can recalibrate the speedo by changing the gear cogs in the speedo to either speed it up and slow it down. It is typically not a cheap proposition so you have to get it right the first time.

Speedo
Hello, i have a 1985 Austin Mini with a central speedo. Im sure that they came standard with the speedo above the steering wheel. While driving down motorway, it says im going 50mph but im overtaking traffic. Just asking if the speedo drives out of the gearbox are different ratios for different speedos. Also i have 145/70 SR12 Tyres on my 12 Alloys, could this be the problem Thanks in advance Robert Potter

Center speedo to 3 clocks on the side?
Do any of you mini Gurus out there know how easy it is to convert from a centre speedo to a 3 clock binnacle (late cooper type). I need a new wiring loom as is, so is the easiest way to get the loom for a min with the 3 clock side binnacle? The car was an 84 city, with a large centre speedo. Im guessing the easiest way is the new loom for a later type min, then maybe a longer speedo cable? I really preferred the layout of the 1275 GT my dad used to have as I always found the large centre speedo a bit ugly. Sorry if the ugly statement offended anyone (mereley my opinion). Its gonna have to be something else for the Christmas list!

Final drive and the speedo itself will change this. Each speedo is calibrated to a specific final drive that the speedo was intended for. If trannies are different in their gear ratios (and this I dont know), then that would change the speedo reading as well.

Tacho -v- speedo
If you were lucky, you would have the tall final drive, and could expect 19mph per 1000rpm shown on the tacho. Otherwise, the Flame Reds generally had the shorter final drive (for sportier acceleration!) and will get around 17.5mph per 1000rpm. So a working tacho (and an accurate speedo) should correllate roughly as: 1000rpm 17-19mph (20mph limit) 1500rpm 27-28mph (30 limit) 2000rpm 34-38mph (40 limit) 2500rpm 44-48mph (50 limit) 3000rpm 50-57mph (60 limit) 3500rpm 61-67mph (70 limit) and if your tacho reads that high: 6625rpm 125-126mph (with a 1380cc engine producing 107bhp) [in theory only officer, honestly!] Replacement second hand, or new, tachos can be picked up from the Mini shows from £10 (s/h) to around £40 (new, late model)

Speedo drive pinions
Can anyone suggest the part number for the speedo drive pinion for an accurate speedo reading with a Smiths large speedo (200kmh type) with a 3.444:1 final drive and 165/60x12 tyres on Minilife 12x5 rims? Ive seen a new speedo of said type for £70, boxed, and wonder if it is a good price. Has anyone replaced the fuel gauge in this type of speedo with the internals from another gauge, such as a voltmeter? I say this because the car I am building will have two fuel gauges (and two filler caps) so the obvious thing would be a matching pair of 2 Smiths classic gauges, and to use the redundant hole in the bottom of the speedo for something I only have one of, like voltmeter, oil temperature, or pressure. That said, I have capillary oil temp and oil pressure gauges, with 270 travel, so it will have to be the voltmeter, or nothing. Maybe I will try wiring it up as an average of the two tanks gauge...

speedo wrong
No, its not the wheel revolution, its the differential. It costs a fortune to re-set the speedo for a new diff. Just get a friend to drive in front of you at certain fixed speeds, then stick some discrete stickers onto the speedo with the real speed. Or get a friend to time you against the mileposts on the motorway. Much cheaper.

Hi, You need to change the speedo drive gear in the gearbox, its under the housing the speedo cable screws onto. Unfortunately I dont know which is the correct gear for your new ratio. Cheers, Gavin :-)
