Spax coil overs
It really depends on the application. If its just a road car then this would be over kill. For street cred its great, but youll spend you life adjusting the suspension unless you know what is correct for the weight distribution of your car, the wheels used, tyres, driving style etc etc. Set it up wrong and youll be worse off than with rubber cones. For track this is far better than coil replacements not least because they are approved (depending on the class) AFAIK coil replacements are not. Again, you need to know what you are doing to get the best out of coil overs. I dont, so I stick to rubber and self adjusting gas dampers which suit me fine and are compatible with the SA racing class. If you do get these, you might as well keep your wallet out and get a beam rear axle too. You might as well get something back for all the weight youve just added.

Hi, Recently bought a second hand set of spax yellow adjustables, i have recently tidyed them up and got new bushes. Anyone have a set of tests i can use to make sure they are working correctly, as want to check before fitting. Also the sdjusters on three of the shocks turn so far and then start clicking in either direction. Any ideas, Regards Nick P

Spax Adjustable Dampers - Help Needed
Dear All,
I just bought a set of Spax Adjustable Dampers (the blue ones) from Mini Spares. However, I have a small problem to understand how these are set up. The instructions dictates that by turning the nob fully anti-clockwise you end up in the softer setting. What I did not understand is how much should I turn it anti-clockwise cause it keeps turning. On the instructions there is that these shocks have 28 settings. Furthermore, once you have found the softest setting it is recomended to harded the shocks up gradually by incrementing 4 clicks on the knob.
Thanks for your help. Ray

Good afternoon,
I was under the impression that the nob would eventually stop at the softest setting, however I may be wrong.
Can anyone else either clarify this is the case or offer further assistance.

Hello Ray, My Spax dampers have the knob, but it eventually stops when turned to softest settings. Recommendations from most users with road cars are about half way (14 clicks) for the front and softer on the rear (8 clicks). Then you can adjust to taste from here.Ride quality will depend on wheel size, tyre type and size, condition of ball joints etc, castor/camber settings, and ride height of your Mini. Hope this helps ? Best regards, Pete Allan (pda49184@aol.com)

The upward adjustment (i.e. making them stiffer) should be accompanied by a definite 'click' as the adjuster goes 'home'. These are at half rotation increments. So the first definite 'click' you feel should be the first adjustment level.
Contrary to what a majority seem to thinks is good, go to 30% setting on the front and 20% on the rear. These adjustments merely stiffen the ride, mainly to allow for oil degredation over time. If you 'bounc' the car at each corner and only the tyre distorts rather than the suspenion moving, you've got it way too stiff for road use.

Thanks guys. It took 3 1/2 turns to go from the softest setting to the harder one.
Thanks once again for your help.

Spax RSX coil-overs
I keep hearing bad things about these. I bought a rear kit for my rebuild thinking they sounded great (which they might be), have yet to find out as car will not be on road for at least another 12 months. Decision time: do I buy the front kit soon as I work my way through or ditch the rears and go standard (as a lot of people seem to think I should) The fact MS sell them is a bit of a recommendation as far as I'm concerned.

They're a bit skittish around town and mine tend to let the back end twitch quite a bit but they are best when pushed hard and stick like glue then.
They can be tricky with wide 12" + wheels because you have to use a lot of preload to get the car the clear the tyres. Go to the trouble of cutting back the arches well and allow the car to sit lower to get the best out of these.

Do you have to strengthen the rear arches as a lot of people insist you do? Sorry can you explain what is meant by 'preload'
Posted: Oct 18, 2006 05:49 PM
It's probably not a bad idea to add some strengthening as they will be taking more load than normal. You used to have to pocket the rear arches just to fit coil overs in, but with the offset tops on the shocks now, it's not necessary. If you do strengthen it, get it done properly or at least plan well ahead as you may end up doing more harm than good. Also, don't forget you have to get the fuel tank back in, so gon't get carried away with struts and bracing.
By preload, I mean the amount of spring compression applied to lift the car up. The coil spring is a set length when under no load. The spring is placed over the damper and a threaded end stop is screwed on to keep it in place. The whole set up is then placed on the car. If the car was put back on it's wheels at this point the tyres would disappear up into the wheel arches because the spring is too soft to hold the weight. So it is necessary to screw in the end stop to compress the spring (pre-loading it - as in applying a constant load before any external load is applied) to give the spring necessary properties to take the weight. Imagine it's like a tyre with very little air in; off the car it looks fine, but fit it and it'll squash flat. Adding air to the tyre to give it the strength it needs it similar to adding preload to a spring.

When I changed my sons rear shocks I found that the steel bush from the old shock absorber had corroded onto the stud that the new shock needed to attach onto thus making the new shock to small to go onto the old stud as I could not get the old bush off the stud I removed the steel bush from the new shock absorber and fitted it over the old steel bush that was ceased on to the stud - hope this makes sense
