Vandals have ripped off my wing mirror!!
Woke up this morning to find my o/s wing mirror pulled half away from the door. Its still hanging on but a bit hard to use when driving as it now vibrates and I cant see much out of it as a consequence. Dont really want to change the style of mirror as its a 2000 Cooper Sport LE (with the silver roof, stripes and mirrors rather than white) and I want to keep it original but cant find anywhere that sells direct replacements of the silver mirrors. Can it be fixed back on? If so, is it easy to do? If it cant be fixed, does anyone know where I can buy a replacement (local Rover dealer is useless!!)? Cheers!

Wing mirror
Bad luck dude, wouldnt you love ten minutes in a room with the little scrotes that do this? Anyway...under the mounting arm part of the mirror should be a little cover that will pop open with a thin screwdriver, the bolts that hold the mirror on are under here. I would take the mirror off first and check the door - see if the threaded insert in the door looks OK. Then whilst its off, give the mirror a check over. If all is OK just put it back on. If ther mirror is damaged I would suggest getting any old matching cooper one and painting it up, put in the effort for the prep work and no-one will be able to tell. If the door is damaged, I dunno, get it to a mini-friendly garage. I see you are in Brighton - check us out at www.brightonminiclub.co.uk

mirrors
From memory, bullit mirrors have a couple of studs on their base that fit through the door skin. You need to try and get your hand up behind their and feel for some nuts. Its a bit difficult to explain without having a door in-front of me. Or perhaps they are glued on? Maximum visability? Have you seen the size of mirrors on busses!! Probably the most efficiant are the standard Rover style ones, Alternativly there is a chrome/stainless mirror thats similar looking. ( i think they are called Tex?) Downton style mirrors look cool, they have a round mirror and are a bullit shape. They fit onto the standard rover mirror arm and offer good visability

if they are not on the usual rover holes, or an adapter, the nuts will be inside the door skin - have you tried to wind down the window and removed the rubber guides - with a thin spanner this could work I had a similar prob i got bullet mirrors from minispares, which im really pleased with - convex for the nearside, takes some getting used to, but i dont think i see any less than i did with the standard rover mirrors. the longer arms allow more visibility than the torpedos.

mirror
the one for the mini will be a direct replacement, if you want a dash mounted mirror, try classic car magazine, or moss-europe.co.uk and get one for the Austin Healey 100/6 or 300, or i think the MG sprite. they had dash mounted mirrors. Stu

I take it this will just be for show? The mini has a low dash and high front seats, you wont see a thing through it other than the rear seats.

torpedo mirrors
Hi all! Could someone help me. Im thinking of purchasing the torpedo mirrors. How do you go about attaching these to a 1998 mini cooper? i understand they origionally where fitted to the wing not the door?!

tricky one this, if you want to be able to actually use them. Your best bet is to find the torpedo/bullet style mirrors that have a recognisable mini style base on and are direct replacements for the standard ones. Failing that, get the wing mounted ones and remove them from the bases and attach them to a pair of old chrome Tex type mirror bases. You may be able to pick up a scabby set at an auto jumble as you only need the bases. The reason for all this is that if fitted directly to the doors, the mirrors sit so low, you cant see the passenger side one at all. Id recommend the convex mirror option too as the flat mirror is too small for safe driving.

I have the torpedo/bullet style mirrors with the standard flat mirror glass mounted directly onto my doors and am currently changing them for normal mirrors as i cannot see a thing in them!

Objects in the rear view mirror......!
Does anyone else find that when driving in a Mini your vision can sometimes be annoyingly hampered by the rear view mirror, especially when looking round left hand bends? What cunning methods have any of you used to over come this? Lower seat? Moving the mirror? Any suggestions? Thanks Chris
