minilife wheels
Posted: Jan 07, 2005 05:19 PM
minilife wheels were made from original type copies of minilites as used in racing in the late 60s early 70s and were made to fit 10 wheel cooper S and will not require any wheel arch mouldings , You have S disc which is fine as the wheels are 4.5 wide with the correct offset and inset you require

MIMILITES
AS THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE SAYS THE QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED. I AM REPLYING TO SAY THAT I HAVE 4.5x10 MINILIFE WHEELS WITH COOPER S OFFSET. THEY ARE FITTED WITH 165/70/10 YOKOHAMAS. NOT THAT IT MAKES ANY DIFFERANCE TO THE OFFSETS, BUT I DO NOT USE THE S DISCS. I USE A 8.4 INCH SOLID DISC SET UP WITH THE NEW DISCS MACHINED TO 7.9 INCHES AND 4 POT MINISPORT CALIPERS.THIS WHEEL/TYRE/BRAKE COMBINATION REQUIRED NO BODY MODS OR ARCHES. I DID TRY VENTED METRO DISCS MACHINED TO 7.9 BUT THIS SET UP WOULD NEED ARCH EXTENSIONS SO I STUCK WITH THE SOLID DISCS.. THE MINISPARES 10 INCH MINILIFE WHEELS ARE GOOD QUALITY AND LOOK JUST LIKE THE WHEELS FITTED TO THE 60S RALLY CARS, THEY LOOK THE DOGS DO DARS ON A MK1. MK 1S NEED 10 S NOT THOSE GHASTLY 12S.

tired
5x12s should be fine. Stick some 165 tires on too. Its only when you start getting to 5.5+ that the problems start unless the Minilife wheels have a very silly offset that pushes them too far in or out, but thats unlikely cause theyd get a lot of them back if they were like that.

re
165/60/12 tires fit just fine on my 12 x 5 MiniLife wheels. Im currently using Yokos, mainly due to the amount of rain that I get over here.

MiniLifes
Im afraid that I wont be able to tell you much about the Minilights, but Ive got a set of MiniLifes with sleeve nuts (not the budget set). Ok, I bought 12, as I installed 8.4 disks and big SP arches. In any event, as for quality, the MiniLife wheels are FANTASTIC! Just my 2 cents, and hopefully bumping the thread to the top will enable someone else to chime in. Maybe you could send an E-mail to our host and ask them about dimensions and fitment issues?

Minilifes
It seems the question has been answered already, but for the record Ive never had a problem with Minilife 12x5 wheels running Yokohama, or Falken 165/60x12 rubber under the standard (sometimes called Special) plastic arches, as fitted to the Mini between 84 and the end. The tyre is visible, but the tread is not, when viewed directly from above, and that is what the MoT tester SHOULD be looking for, not the sidewall poking out a little bit. pb

Speedo drive pinions
Can anyone suggest the part number for the speedo drive pinion for an accurate speedo reading with a Smiths large speedo (200kmh type) with a 3.444:1 final drive and 165/60x12 tyres on Minilife 12x5 rims? Ive seen a new speedo of said type for £70, boxed, and wonder if it is a good price. Has anyone replaced the fuel gauge in this type of speedo with the internals from another gauge, such as a voltmeter? I say this because the car I am building will have two fuel gauges (and two filler caps) so the obvious thing would be a matching pair of 2 Smiths classic gauges, and to use the redundant hole in the bottom of the speedo for something I only have one of, like voltmeter, oil temperature, or pressure. That said, I have capillary oil temp and oil pressure gauges, with 270 travel, so it will have to be the voltmeter, or nothing. Maybe I will try wiring it up as an average of the two tanks gauge...

wheel/brakes
metro calipers will not go, if someone says modify them dont. When i built up the brakes on my mk1 i used minisport 4 pot calipers and 8.4 inch discs. The 8.4 inch disc required machining to 7.9 inch. I used solid discs and 4.5 inch s offset minilife wheels as i did not want wheel arches.. The vented discs are to wide in my opinion and made the wheel stick out past the standard wing line to much, hence the use of narrower solid discs. If u intend to use the arches pictured vented discs will be ok and personally i would go for 6 or 6.5 x 10 MB split rims. Funds permitting. Dave

wheels
standard non cooper 10 inch steel wheels were 3.5x10 originally then widened to 4.5x10. If you want 10 inch minilite wheels that do not stick out past the arches with the 165/70/10 yokohama 008 tyre then look at the Minispares minilife wheels. They are available in 4.5x10 in standard and Cooper S offsets. If you have disc brakes like me you will need the S offset to avoid needing wheel arch extensions. I have S offset 4.5x10 Minilifes and yoko 008s. If you have drums on the front you will not need the S offset. However if you plan to fit discs in the future then the drum brake offset wheel will make the wheel/tyre stick out past the wheel arch requiring the use of arch extensions. If you do want discs in the future speak to Minispares they will be able to tell you whether the S offset on a drum brake system will be ok. To give you some idea with the 4.5x10 minilifes fitted your car will look just like the Coopers on the Italian Job..

10 wheel probelm
hi i've just bought a set of minilife 4.5x10 wheels for my mk3 mini, the fronts fit perfect but the backs press up against the inner arch and damper stopping the wheels from spinning, the offset of the wheels r print on the packaging as ET32 but i can not see that code printed on the rims only m27 (if that helps)
can anybody help or suggest any tips so that they fit (e.g spacer size)my mini has drums all round
cheers
