Essentially all that needs doing is fitting suitable exhaust valve seat inserts into the head. For more information on this go to 'Articles', 'Calvers Corner' and see the stuff on unleaded I did there. KC

HT Lead Order
Can someone tell me the order that the spark plug leads go into the distributor cap, and which hole if you are looking at the cap straight on. Thanks Chris

Lead order
the lead order is 1-3-4-2 anti-clockwise rotation. as to which hole No1 goes in depends on where the rotor is facing when firing on that cylinder. I do it the trial and error way. Move the engine to TDC and remove the distributor cap, whereever the rotor is facing is either No4 or No1. So if you put No1 lead in corresponding hole and follow round with the rest. Now try starting the engine(providing timing is somewhere near) it will either fire or spit through the carb. If it spits through the carb move the leads round 180 degrees and it will then fire.

Thanks Can you tell me which is the no1 spark plug. do you work from left to right when facing the engine or from right to left. Chris

Do you mean the connection has come off the glass? Can you carefully solder it back on to a bit of metal left on there?

MPI leads 2,1,4,3
I replaced the veto clutch (full kit) in my 98 MPI, it will now only start if the leads are a 2,1,4,3 sequence rather than a 1,2,3,4. It is possible to put a clutch in 180 degrees out, or any suggestions what is wrong ? possibly a SPI clutch ?

I belive it is posible to fit the flywheel in the wrong place messing up the crank signal. So you may have to take it all apart again!!

Thanks Andy, There goes another Saturday, but I expect to be al lot quicker this time around. A reply from another fourm suggested the order should be 1,3,4,2, but basing it on 1,2,3,4 as per Haynes.
Thanks again.

If it's distributor ignition then it'll be 1,3,4,2. But if it's coil pack (no distributor) then it will be slightly different. As there's a wastage spark.

Hi there, just checked my Rover TIS cd and they have 1,4,3,2 starting at the bottom left af the coil pack and going in a clockwise rotation.

u need a small amount of resistance in the leads to get a gd spark so comlet copper leads arnt best. std ones increase resisance with age so need renewing alot. some leads have higher resistances to help stop radio interfearance think more so with electronic ignition (post 84?) minis. id buy gd spark plug caps as loose fiting cheap ones that corode wont help. nkg gold plated ones are gd. or i think u can get caps molded to leads so no risk of corroshion in joint.
have a look at these seem alright
