Blimey
Thas a lot! Sounds like a Final Drive Gear Issue. This can be changed by changing the crownwheel and pinion gears in the gearbox. There should be more information on final drives in the articles section.

diff ratio
if you have 17 teeth on the pinion you must have either 62 or 64 teeth on the crownwheels 62 teeth gives 3.67 and 64 gives 3.765. most early 850 and pre 70 minis had 3.76 ratio and the old 1100 shape 4 door saloon had 3.67. Does this help any

3.1 ratio final drive needed, urgent!
As you may know I had a bit of a disaster and ive got my engine out and while Im on I want a 3.1 ratio crownwheel and pinion for easier cruising (especially for when I drive to Le Mans in the summer!)
So Im looking for one in the Newcastle, Durham area but I can get a reasonable distance. Ive got some money waiting if you've got one.
Go to those sheds people, you're looking for one with 59 teeth on the crownwheel and 19 on the pinion.
bobplews@tiscali.co.uk is the place to get me, cheers!

FD
For a 10 inch Wheel I find the best FD is a 3.44 to 1 which gives a speed of 60mph for 3500 rpm running 165/70x10 tyres. This is not too long and provides good low speed motoring... Going to 2.9 is an option for more long legged driving, but your acceleration will suffer. How to change, you will have to remove the Gearbox from the car, which normally entails the whol power unit comming out, and then pulling the diffcasing of, and removing the crownwheel from the diff and also the pinion from the gearbox... You need to be pretty confident with you mechanical ability and will also need a seriously large torque wrench for the bolt which holds the pinion on...

Trannex SCCR Box and Drop Gears - Possibly for Sale
Hi,
I have a SCCR box and drops from a Metro Turbo I used to own. I was holding on to it incase I bought another MT, but now I think I have given up on that idea!
The primary drop gear has a slight surface scratch. The bush is good though.
the laygear is damaged however, and requires a new one and layshaft - should cost around £120.
Other than that the box is good. The diff was pretty new too. But I think I have a new crownwheel and pinion that I can throw in.
Im located in London, if anyone wants to have a first hand look at the box.
Let me know if you need any further info.
Judging by what these go for on ebay etc, I am initally looking around £400 as it is. That includes the Drops and new crownwheel and pinion
Thanks

Stiff Diff
are the planet gears stiff to turn on the diff pin?
usually its a problem with the fibre or the thrust washers...
does it become easier to turn if you relase the crownwheel bolts? - if so then check the fibre/mica washers...
