i have a H reg Mini City and my clutch pedal is really stiff when i initially apply pressure to it. after i have apply enough pressure the clutch is really easy to push in, its just getting it going. i presume there is a problem or is this usual for minis? could anyone give me any help Thanks

It could be that the flexi pipe between the master and slave is breaking down on the inside. I know that this is one of many things it might be, just that Ive experienced it several times with different cars over the last few months. Maybe coincidence but...

clutch problem
Have just got my tuned 1275 running again, but i cannot engage any gears as the clutch is dragging. If i start the engine in gear, I can pull away normally, and the clutch slave cylinder has full travel. Clutch feel is good, it just drags sufficiently to stop putting it in gear.... clutch is verto with lightweight flywheel (minispares) new plate and\release bearing. Any ideas what could be wrong???

clutch
sounds like i need spacers, bought the flywheel from Minispares, but no mention of needing spacers, now the whole thing is built and in the car - damn!!! anyone know the part numbers??

its got a new clutch arm and release bearing, I have reused the diaphram. clutch operation is smooth and with good bite at te right point on the pedal. its just not letting go so enough so you can engage gears. the only way you can use the car is to start in gear with the clutch down, and it pulls away perfectly smoothly. Its not possible to change gear as the drag prevents the gears engaging. any help appreciated, I have rebuilt the engine and box and everything else is brilliant......if only I could drive the thing!!!

You might take a look at where the throwout shaft goes thru the clutch cover - if its dirty and binding in there the pedal will be stiff. But as you mentioned that after it moves a bit its smooth, Id say give all the clevis pins (dont forget the one at the MC) a look for extreme wear. Replace as necessary.

Re stiff Clutch
Hmmm, I have noticed on my J reg Cooper, when queueing in traffic with a lot of clutch use it is hard to push down after i have released it, I am very worried I may not get it down in time and nudge the car in front. any ideas chaps? it seems fine ordinarily, just when I having to push it down shortly after releasing it.

re clutch problem
It may have been a little snugness in a tolerance somewhere. I had an Dodge Caravan in which the clutch did something similar, especially in colder weather. To engage first gear or especially reverse, we sometimes had to start it in gear or select a synchromesh gear and then quickly shift to the desired gear. The engine was a 2.5L Turbo with a Getrag 5 speed with square cut gears. The problem was the output shaft splines to the clutch plate were a little tight and when the pedal was depressed, the clutch plate would not slide clear of the flywheel. Just enough friction to keep the clutch plate spinning.

Air bubbles in clutch master cylinder
I have converted my mini to manual from automatic, I have used parts from my other mini that is work in progress they have not been used for 2 years. would this be cured by new seals or would I have to replace the unit?. The slave cylinder bleeds up ok but you can hear and see the air bubbles in the master cylinder as you press the pedal. Any help gratefully received.

Fantastic. Is there any visible difference between the two as the cylinder came from a 74 car but i am unsure of the year of the cylinder

Please help More clutch problems
I am really struggling now I need ideas. This is a follow on to my previous post. Now that i have fitted a clutch cylinder instead of a brake cylinder I have a good place to start, I have also fitted a new copper pipe, a new flexi pipe and a new slave cylinder. I have bled the thing about 6 times and it still takes 3 pedal pushes to get pressure to operate the clutch, all the joints are dry and i cannot hear air anymore. Please help its driving me insane. Would this be as daft as throwout adjustment?

could be throwout adjustment. brakes do a similar thing when the pads are a long way from the discs, when youve just renewed them or something. the best way to find out would be adjust it.
