Fitting spotlights... HELP required
Trying to fit a set of 4 spotlights in a bonnet mounted pod, fitted the pod to the bonnet & done the initial wiring for the lamps, what i am trying to do is find the dim dip relay (if there is one) or the colour of the main beam wiring so i can use it as the switch for the relay for my spotlights. The mini is a 94 model Mini 35, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Chris

right then mate, as far as i can remember, the high beam is a blue and white wire and the dip beam is a blue and red wire, should all be traceable from the main lights them selves, hope this helps.

the Blue and white wires behind the grille wiht a bundle of bullet connectors are a good place to wire your relay into, or traced back up the o/s inner wing where the spotlight relay can probably be mounted very easily.

Well you're going to need a relay for a start. But you might find that the standard battery and alternator isn't up to coping with the extra drain, especially when trying to turn the engine over on a freezing cold morning?
I've heard fitting a Pug 306 Diesel battery makes a difference and so does fitting an uprated alternator. Mini Spares supply a 70amp alternator for most Mini models which can cope with all the extras you might want to add.

Our Green '92 mayfair has spots which come on when you go to full beam. All fitted with a relay and everything. It's like daylight when you drive along (so long as nobody is coming the other way, in which case it drops to being like dusk).
About every third time you switch them on, it resets the stereo (like it switches it off and on again). Also, if the fan is going, the speed drops to almost nothing. I don't know if there is some dodgy wiring in there, but generally I'm left with the feeling that they are OK for decoration, but best not to be used.

Just fitting a decent set of Halogen headlamps would be more than adequate, because even on dipped you'll still get a clear view of the road ahead in the dark, which is far safer than adding loads of spot lamps that only make a difference on full beam.

if power drops with high wattage lamps on a higher ampage alternator and greater Amp/hour battery will overcome it. or buy more efficent halogen/zeon spotlamps. i bourt £30 philips halogen bulbs for my classic bmw to replace standard halogen bulbs ment to be equivilent to 120wat output with only 60wat input they light up everything so well, only truble as dipped lights are about equal to 80 or so watt get flashed quite a bit on dipped lights but only uses same power as original bulb.

spotlight options
I am going to fit 2 spotlights to my car. I know they should be fitted so they turn on only when main beam is on but is it legal if i wire it so they can be turned on/off manually when dipped beam is turned on. Just need to know incase i drive past the local constabulary (and if i should hide the manual switch). I just wanted to run them to give some light on the area directly infront the car (so they point down a bit) not to blind every motorist in town like so many BMW's that seem to have them stuck on while having sidelights only???

they can either be wires to come on automatically with full beam or with a switch or it can come on with full beam when i switch is in right position. As long as it isnt on automatically with dipped beam lights should be fine. legally you can only have spot lamps on when main beam is on. fog lamps should only be on when visibility is very poor legally. most auxilary lamps fitted to cars are fog lamps and as such can be used without main beam being on legally.

running lights like that you will prob find battery runs down so uprated alternator would be advisable if you plan to use them much

spotlights
i have recently upgraded my front lighting equipment in the form of 6 spotlights. Four above the bumper on a spotlight bar, and 2 under the bumper.
the problem i am facing is that the 4 spotlights on the bar above the bumper vibrate a lot whilst i am driving. What this means is that drviers in front think im flashing them when really its just the vibration.
Just wondering whether any one can give me some advice on how to stop this happening. I have thought about fitting another supporting bracket in the centre. Just liek the ones on the end of the bar.
Appreciate any help.
Many thanks Dan.

its against the highway code to use spotlights when cars are in front. they are only ment to be used with full beam so they are most likly flashing you because u have them on and are blinding them.

First, wire the relay into the high beam not the dip beam.
Second, go to B&Q, pick up up some small bore aluminium tube (3-4mm ID) cut it to length t ofit between the back of the lamp bowl and the front panel, drill both accordingly and then use a self tapping machine screw into the aluminium tube to fix the lamps in place.
