Mk1 Grille
Ok all you Mini experts. No luck on the Headrest problem so what about this one? I want to put a Mk1 grille on my 88 Red Hot. I also want the Moustache and ends. Apart from removing the bonnet lip where the chrome trim fits, are there any other modifications I will need to make? Cheers Ty

Van Grille
I would keep the original, painted the same color as the body. I am not a purist, but I would keep that original. Good luck on the restoration.

the grille idea sounds good. proper grille buttons would be neater and easier tho. ive got them on my mayfair, and its one of the best things ever for ease of maintence eg distrutor and alternator white with black roof is common, but always looks good. as does brg with black roof. Leonard

Grille surround holes
Hi everyone This problem has been really bugging me for a long time now. You have your grille, and your surrounds that go on the left and right. Behind these you can also put a sortof carrier device, but its the two outside edges im troubled with. There are 3 holes through which you screw screws that hold the edging on. Will someone please confirm whether these holes are enclosed holes, i.e. like this: O or are they supposed to be like this: C ? If they are supposed to be like the O, is it a common thing on minis that the grille end holes snap and form a C shape instead? Thanks

grille surrounds
Hmmmm, I replaced mine a little while ago, I seem to remember the one I took off (the other fell off!) had a combo of O holes and C holes, the C holes looked like they started life as O holes though. Then with the new grille and surrounds none of the holes lined up anyway so I drilled some new ones! I also binned the screws as the holes had worn too big and they wouldnt go tight and put some hank-bushes in the car (4mm), they are like a smell threaded bit of tube and you flatten the end over to stop them moving once in position, then you just have bolts instead of screws.

grille not fitting
As written in the description of the item ALA6654MS: This grille was introduced when the MKII Mini was first shown in 1968. Since then the same basic grille can be fitted to all later models of the Mini. So, I bought this grille for my Innocenti Mini 1000 1974, but I can assure that there is no way to fit it onto this car. So?????

Grille trouble
What is the main couse of the grille not fitting? if its that the holes dont line up, then youll have to drill some more. or is it the wrong shape entirely? Stu

mk1 grill
hello does anyone know if a mk1 grill can fit a mk3 i know i will have to change the bonnet i think ?

mk1 grille
you can either get a new bonnet, or grind the lip off your mk3. youll need a new moustache surround and that should be it.it shuld screw into the origional holes, if not, just get a drill to it. it should total about £70-£90 (minus a new bonnet) hope it helps. Stu

Mk 1 grille
If it is an original Mk 1 grille I dont know if you have to change the bonnet or not. Minispares sell new Mk 1 style grilles which should bolt straight on and you just have to remove the bonnet lip (and touch up the paintwork of course). I have bought one but its not fitted yet as the Mini is in for repair but Ive been assured it should fit without problem.

mk 1 grille and carb change
First mod on the newcar coming up, or atleast i hope so. I really want to fit the mk1 grill to my 90 cooper but little unsure on how much work is involved. Am i right in thinking that all is involved is removing the top of the grill from my bonnet and grinding down the lip. If so, do you have to have any paintwork done after this. Also i ve got the carb model cause i was under the impresion these were better. i want to spend some money on the engine and thought about buy a new set of carbs, any suggestions.Still learning about this life changing car

RE: mk 1 grille and carb change
Hi there, good decision about fitting a Mk1 grille, they look much better. You are right about having to removing the lip from the bonnet and you will at least need to touch up the bonnet where youve removed the lip cos youll proberly be down to bare metal. What you can do is (like the old rally minis and attached pics of my mini) spray the front of the bonnet with a semi matt black and put your registration on there, i think you can but the sticky letters from hardware stores. If youre not keen on grinding down the lip then you can buy a Mk1 fibreglass bonnet for about £35-£40, but you would then have to spray the whole bonnet. Your also spot on about the carb model, there more responsive and more tuneable than the injection model. I wouldnt worry about changing the carb though, it sould have a 13/4 HIF44 SU carb which is the best carb to fit to a fast road mini. A stage one kit is the best place to start when tuning a mini, it lets the engine breath properly and will sound much better, ive attached a link below to minispares kit. http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=36115 Also fitting an electric fan will give you about a 5hp increase, it takes some of the drag away from the engine. Best of luck, Daniel.

Hi again, You can get the electric fan kits from any mini specialist, there around about £100 so do check to see if yours has got one or not. I know the later minis were fitted as standard but im not sure what year they switched over. The electric fans are fitted inside the passenger side wheel arch so youll be able to see it if you look behind the front left wheel. If its not electric then itll be in between the engine and the radiator. Minispares stage one kits come with a K&N filter element which goes in the original air box that sits on top of the engine, which is an improvement over the original air filter. The pancake filters are good, and cheep, around about £10 i think, i had them on my mini when i had twin carbs and i was perfectly happy with them. The K&N cone filter is supposed to be the ultimate (link below), but you proberly wont notice the differance on the road and there alot more expensive, around £45. http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=35281 Sorry about the pics, i think that was my fault, ive tryed to attach them again so hopefully you should be able to see them this time. Glad to be able help, Daniel.

Grill
I am looking to change my front grill to a new one as my current one is now a bit weathered, the only problem is I don’t understand all the MK1, 2 etc etc, my mini is a 1993 L reg Mayfair, any advice on which one to get would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

A `93 mini originally has the MK2 style grill. If you only want to replace with the same style/shape, you can use any Grill except for the MK1 style which has a different shape and surrounding (mustache) and would need modifying the bonnet (removing the bonnet lip where the upper grill surround is attached to. Cheers, Diddi

The one shown in the picture is the correct type for you, yours if yours is a Mayfair its MK III, it could also be fitted with a MK II grille wihich iw quite similar but a bit more hardy though. The only thing is it costs like a hand and a leg to purchase the whole thing.
