Bonnet recognisition
Just bought a 1971 Mini that was advertised (badly) on this site. Trying to pin point the bonnet on it, Ive never seen one like it before. Externally it is like any other mk3, but on the underside it is different to all Ive seen before. There are triangular reinforcing plates in the corners. But the really odd bit is the bonnet stay catch. There is a 4 long steel plate hanging down from the bonnet (near brake cyl) with a long slot that a rubber channel fits into that allows the stay to slot in. Doesnt look retro fitted to me, looks pretty factory like. But highly different to what Ive seen before. Cheers, Glen.

Bonnets
Hi Glen, Hows it going? The triangles in the corners could be reinforcing for bonnet pins? Though you expect there to be some holes in the bonnet to.. Sounds retro fit to me, like you I have never heard of anything like that before.

Bonnet recognition
Ob, No mate, not retro fit to my eye. This looks very factory type pressings. It is the bonnet stay catch that is most peculiar to me! Cheers, Glen.

bonnet pins
Hey Snowfruit, I used the lockable bonnet pins at the rear of my bonnet when i flip fronted mine. They are very good and look neat as they only leave a small dome showing. They take a bit of time to get lined up though, as youll have to make some plates to hold them in the engine bay.

How to fit lockable bonnet pins
I just received my lockable bonnet pins to fit to my removable bonnet. Ive also just read the article in the latest issue of Mini Magazine on how to fit bonnet pins. However the lockable type include a separate round platewith an oval hole. Where do these go? Also I only got two pins and of course I need four. However I can;t really see the point in having to unlock four pins every time I want to remove the bonnet. Are there any other type of pins that are unobtrusive like the lockable ones?

Hello all, I wanted to paint (rather that stick stickers) the two white stripes on the bonnet. Can anyone tell me width of the stripes and also how much I shall leave space from the edge(side) of the bonnet. Happy new year to all. Thanks Ray

Bonnet Stripes
My classic is about to go in for a paint job, and I want to add bonnet stripes, but don't know the dimensions. Since mine is the only classic for 200 miles I need help. Could someone measure the width, and perhaps the distance from the edge of the bonnet to edge of the stripe? Maybe post a Pic? Any help would be great. Thanks, Nik

It's probably a lot easier and cheaper to use the 'stick-on' type of stripes, rather than do a two-tone paint job. They're usually about 4 inches wide, but how far from the edge of the bonnet you stick them is entirely up to you. The beauty of stick-ons is you can try them in different positions before you stick!

...I agree, just stick/paint them wherever you want them, thats the beauty of a classic mini, you can do anything to it and it isn't wrong! Oh and yeah, go for the stick ons. about £8 a pair.

Faded Bonnet Stripes.
Hi all,
I have white(ish) bonnet stripes - sticky type that have faded/stained over time. I would like to replace them with new shiny ones but I'm a little worried about removing them and possible damage to paint work. Will they come off neatly or leave stubborn bits behind? Has anyone done the same....Can anyone help?

When you pick the stripes off, there may be some residue left behind. If so, wipe some white spirit or turps over the area. It won't hurt your paint, but ought to get rid of any sticky stuff. The tar remover products bought at auto stores is essentially the same.
Then give it a good wash, and a polish, before re-applying new ones.

When i took mine of, i used a hair drier to remove them, but it did take a bit of paint with it, so get ready with the knifing putty just in case.

I'll give it a go then...fingers crossed.
