tail lights
I had the same problem and i spent ages working it out as i would replace the fuse and the panel lights and tail lights would last about a minute and bang fuse blown. After much looking it turned out to be the rear number plate light. The plastic lugs on the lens that hold the copper contacts for the number plate light bulbs, one of these lugs had snapped and so the contact was earthing out every time on the chrome housing and blowing the fuse.So take the number plate light apart and have a look. Hope this helps. Sean

In line Fuse Wiring
If your having problems with your dash lights and O/s tail lights, it wouldnt point to those fuses, check all the connection to the fusebox, as the terminals normally tend to corrode. Also the tail lights could be the connection in the boot, where the tailights plug into the wiring loom. i did have a problem with my mini not starting and located it the a fuse behind the carb. to find out what the fuses are for, just look up the wiring diagram for your year of car, check the colour of wire going to the fuse, and check it on the wiring diagram, hope this helps Iain

im thinking its probably a bad earth but wanted to check before i pull out the fuel tank. to get to the light earth.
basically when my tail lights are on and i brake the left tail light goes out but the right one stays on and the brake light comes on. the left hand tail light goes completely out. it quite worrying coz i must turn into a motorbike if your behind me. the light is earthed on one of the lights bolts and looks clean

fuses!
I can only find three of my line fuses, behind the air filter, where you said, and only one of them seems to do anything, ( red and blue one side, blue the other side) the foglight. I need to find the one that operated the tail lights, and right side light.

electrical maladies
I've recently rebuilt the back end of the wifes Mini 1000 (1982), now , it's all back together I find that I've got no tail lights - brake lights work , fog light works, reversing lights work, but no bloody front or rear sidelights or fog light warning light(in switch) -I give up - bulbs are fine fuses are fine - gut instinct says it's an earthing problem has anyone got any ideas???

Wiring Diagram 1991 City
Having problems with the head and tail lights on my 1991 city, tested switch, relay, fuses etc, I think it's a break in the loom somewhere because if I supply the live straight off the battery into the live on one of the bulbs, they all come on and I can use the switch between dipped and beam. So long story short, has anyone got a wiring diagram for 1991 City 998? Long shot I know and I hear the 1991 was a bit of a bodge (more than usual!) as they where working towards the injection models by then.

Lucas your swine!
Thatll be Lucas the Prince of Darkness at work. Did you know that Lucas is an acronym for Loose and Unsoldered Connectors And Splices! If youve already checked the fuses and given them a spin in the holders (they get a bit corroded over time and spinning the round in the holder usually clears it) then your most likely culprets are either the utter arse connectors under the bonnet slam panel or the inline fuse holders under the windscreen in the engine bay. The side lights are connected seperately with a single connector each under the slam panel. One wire is red/black the other is red/white I think. These often get dry so a clean with a wire brush helps. Check to see if the bulbs are ok too. Problems with tail lights and dash lights are usually caused, weirdly, by a poor gound in the rear number plate lamp. It causes the fuse to persistantly blow which takes out your tail lights and your dash lights. The inline fuses under the windscreen in the engine bay usually respond well to getting hold of them all and giving them a bit of a scrunch in your hand. It helps to free up any dry connections. If this doesnt work, look for the brown/orange wires going through one fuse and check this one in particular. Long term, you are much better to replace both the standard fuse box and the inline fuses with a pair of modern fuse boxes available from Demon Tweeks and the like. They are much less prone to corrosion and you can get spare fuses more easily.

headlights not working
Hi everyone, we have a mk3 1975 and the headlights are not working, the high beam works, the tail lights work, the indicators work front and rear and the front park lights work, it happened when we went to start it turned the lights on and there was a small puff of smoke from the steering column area - could it be the indicator stalk wiring??? - its not the front connectors, its not the light switch, we have power at the switch and also power at the column when we turn the lights on but there is no power behind the lights, I understand that the earlier cars had no inline fuses for the lights -- hope my description is helpful - any ideas welcomed

Engine cuts out when you let go of the ignition key
Have an 85 Auto Mayfair.Engine will start when key is turned/held to Position 3 but cuts out when key is released (back to position 2). Not isolator switch otherwise engine would not turn over. I've checked both Low & High tension sides including Distributor, ignition leads, spark plugs, coil, rotor arm, points, condensor & solenoid. All check out ok & have a good spark also fuel supply is ok.I'm now in the process of checking out fuses & connections. Rear loom (tail, brake, indicator & reversing lights) doesn't have any power.Could it be ignition switch related. Any thoughts. Thanks

Fuses/ Eletrical Problems!!!! Need Help
i have just spent the summer and autum getting my mini on the road in time for me passing my driving test, unforntuatly my tail lights do not come on when my head lights are. Also, my indicators do not flash just stay on or off, i've changed the flasher unit but this has made no difference. I think the problem is with number 7 (red wire) on the fuse box as every time in put a fuse in here it blows. Can anyone help me??? thanks, Jace

electrical stuff...
Im getting better with the mechanical repairs, but this electrical stuff befuddles me. Im not suffering any blown fuses. It just seems to be the lights that flash. I have head lamps, tail lamps, brake lights - just no indicators. I wish I knew how to check the wiring with any degree of certainty. I found a flasher unit behind the instrument cowl, but I dont know how to tell if its any good. I actually only know its a flasher because its stamped on the housing. I took the plastic cover off, and wiggled the contact and it causes my driving lights to turn on and off so maybe it has nothing to do with my flashers?? I guess Im going to have to have a mechanic look it over, but I know how time consuming finding electrical faults can be - so that could equal a pricey shop bill for nothing but labor. Im also faced with having to replace my cones (sagging driver sice) and tie bars and bottom arms (badly worn outer tire edge due to bent bar and flattened bushings). Im going to adjustables so I can get some negative camber to help the cornering a little. Anyhow, thanks for the suggestions - keep em coming!! Vince

Wiring mess
This is a hard one to call without actually looking at the car. What you need to do is localise the problem, which is pretty simple to do. what you need to do is test ALL you electrics 1-by-1 (you will need help of a friend i.e you cant check your brake lights and push the pedal) and write down whats working and what’s not working. (Remember to turn the ignition on to Position III, so that the ignition and oil light are on!) Are the rear lights (side lights) the only electric item not working, or do other electrics not work either (like the instrument panel lights would be a obvious one). If a couple of electrics dont work then its likely it relates to the fuse box or in-line fuses. Heres what you fuse box should look like... (Top of fuse box) Fuse 1 = 35Amp = White Wire (left) to Green Wire (right) Fuse 2 = 25Amp = Brown wire to Purple Wire Fuse 3 = 25Amp = Light green and white wire to Light green and orange wire Fuse 4 = 15Amp = Red and green wire to Red wire (Bottom of fuse box) All the in-line fuses should be 10-15Amp (15 to be sure!) **Note: I Believe there are other in-line fuses behind the instrument panel on later minis. Not sure what Amps they take, but I think the relate to the headlights. Dont quote me on that tho. If the fuse-box isnt set up like this rearrange it! perhaps consider changing the Fuse box all together to a newer style, using blade fuses instead of glass ones. Anyway, Fuse 4 would be the one you interested in, which works the Tail lights, interior lights and Dim/Dip Relay so these other systems may not work either. Make sure the correct fuse is used and see if it still blows. If so then try a higher one like 25Amp. If only the tail lights are not working then this could be a bad earth or something, but if like that electrician said theyre a mess. He might be right and its going to be difficult to sort, especially via forum posts Maybe, after this long explanation, the best bet would be to contact a local mini club or enthusiast in your area. Batter your eye-lids and ask nicely if they’d take a look. They may even do it for free, being a woman in distress and all! Hope this helps, Luke

in line fuse wiring
Please can anyone help, i have a mini 35 from 1994 and have an issue with the in line fuses under the bonnet just behind the carb. There are 6 of them and i need to know what the correct wiring combination should be. problem with intermittent dash lights and o/s tail light only, any ideas. i have the latest mini manual but the wiring diagram seems to be different.

fog lights
If it's an injection Mini, I believe the loom is wired differently to that of a carb model?
Anyway here is my 1990 Rover Mini Cooper Handbook, that shows a full list of all the fuse and in-line fuse ratings: -
Mini Owner's Handbook link
Give that a whirl and let us know if it helps?
The only other information I have is that of the later in-line fuse ratings as listed in the Haynes manual: -
