Push Button Starter
Hello Does anyone know if it is simple to fit a push button starter and or an end of the world switch (red one like on bombs in the movies, but used for rallying in reality) to a 1986 mini Mayfair to replace the key starter? Know they are not to some peoples liking, but i really want a push button starter and end of the world switch. Thanks :-)

push starter
if its a two pin push button you need a pemanant live one side and the switch live to to starter the other both can be found under ther colum surround if you do it this way you will need to have the ignition swithed on or put another switch for the ignition live and fuel pump if electric not mechanical or the car will not fire

sump plug thread
Ordered the repair plug today, plan is to permanantly fix the plug and do the oil changes via the dip stick hole as per Smart cars. Oh the joys of owning a mini again....the last time I owned one it had a starter button in the floor and the word seven on the boot lid!!!!!

push button
I have fitted a push button starter, the wires are at the bottom of the steering cowel. The two that need to be connected are a white cable and a white with red stripe cable, i should check these with a multimeter before connecting as there are some differences in some cars. Cheers Nick P

Starting Out of Car
Not hard to start the engine on the floor. You of course need to have the radiator mounted with coolant, run heater hose between the two openings so the system is leak free. Fill with oil. Run some fuel line from the carb(s) to an electric pump to a fuel source. Take the solenoid off the car and hook a battery cable to it from a fresh battery and then from the solenoid to the starter. Run a hot wire from the hot side of the solenoid to the fuel pump and also one to the ignition side of the coil, then a wire from the other side of the coil to the dizzy. Hook a ground wire from the negetive side of the battery to somewhere on the engine. With these wires attached the engine should start as long as the spark plug wires are hooked up. Hook a muffler to the stub of the exhaust header. Plumb in an oil pressure gauge and make sure all the oil lines are hooked up to a cooler if you have one. The whole thing can sit on a piece of old carpet. Have a fire extiguisher handy just in case. By pushing the button on the solenoid the thing should eventually start. To turn it off pull the hot wire off the battery or the ignition side of the coil.

HI, Quick question which is the HOT side? Theres a bolt terminal which goes to the + battery, in line with this is a cable whic runs the the starter. Lower down one each side is a tang for other wire.. which is which? also does solinode the not need earthing? and there doesnot seem to be a button anywhere. Thanks In advance Richard

Starting problems
It certainly sounds like a dead solenoid. Early ones had a big button you could press to operate the starter manually, but I expect yours doesn't.
The solenoid has two huge terminals, and one small one.
One of the huge terminals should be permanently live - it's the feed from the battery. You may also have some smaller cables coming off that to feed the car electrics.
The small terminal is only live when you turn the starter switch - so put a meter on it and get someone to turn the switch while you watch.
If there's nothing happening, then the fault is elsewhere - possibly in the switch itself. If there is power when the switch is turned, put the meter on the second huge terminal, and again see what happens when the switch is turned. If nothing happens here, then it's definitely the solenoid.

aircraft style starter
It's most likely the wire you need is white with a red stripe at the ignition barell.
Depending on the year of manufacture, it either feeds 12V to the starter solenoid or 12V to the starter relay which then actuates the starter solenoid.
Just connect your switch between battery +ve and the white/ red wire at the ignition switch. Your switch should be rated for 5 Amps to be safe.
