Rocker cover / Fuel gauge problem
Ive just bought a 1997 mini. Ive noticed some oil spots on the rocker cover and it seems oil is leaking through the two bolt holes. When I checked them they seemed loose so I tightened them by hand only. Can anyone tell me if these should be like this or is there a specifc torque setting they should be tightened to? Also my petrol gauge seems to be out by about 1/4 of a tank (filled up and it was 3/4 full on the gauge). Anyone know how to fix this??? Thanks in advance. Matt

Exhaust fumes from rocker cover
Hi, I have exhaust fumes coming from my rocker cover when the engine is running. The head gasket was recently changed and this has been happening since then. Any ideas? Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I thought it was oil at first but it is definitely exhaust fumes, it is as if the exhaust is blocked and it is all pouring out of the rocker cover filler cap. I took the breather pipe (or what I think is the breather pipe) and cleaned that out, I also had the fire trap and cover off the back of the engine block and cleaned that out but no joy. I read in the Haynes manual about an air pump, could this be the cause, if it is not working/blocked? The Mini is an 89 Mini City 1000. Thanks again for the help.

Rocker cover
Ive recently done my head gasket on my 1993 cooper (spi) and replaced the rocker cover with a alloy one ive used a cork gasket supplied in a kit i bought from minispares, but someone from a rover garage (well was a rover garage) told me yesterday that if its got a alloy rockercover i need to put a rubber gasket on it not a cork one, any ideas if this is true ive not run it fully yet but everything seems fine.

From my experience, the cork ones work much better, although I usually use two. I stick one to the cover, and one to the head, using RTV type gasket sealant. Makes a leak-proof joint thats easy to take apart, and the one on the head stops oil running over the edge when the covers off.

A small amount of exhaust when you remove the oil filler cap is quite normal for an elderly mini. However, if its excessive and chugging in time with the engine then it usually means the piston rings are excessively worn and exhaust gases are escaping via the piston bores into the crankcase, and out via the oil filler cap. The first thing to do is check the compression on the cylinders - first dry, then repeat after filling each cylinder with a little oil, which will help to seal any leaking rings. If this dramatically increases the compression figures then you know whats wrong.

Rocker Cover Gasket Seal
just bought R ('97) rover mini, but rocker cover seal has gone. Does ne one know if i can replace this on its own or will removing the rocker cover disturb the head gasket resulting in a blown one?

It's a very easy replacement to do. Basically und the two top nuts holding the cover down, detach any cables which might prevent removel of the cover and it comes away in your hand.
Carefully clean the gasket faces on the cover and on the head where the gasket fitted to remove any old gasket material, paying particular attention to not let any old gasket material fall into the exposed head where it can get carried into the engine.
fitting is the reversal of removal, except you might spend a good few minutes trying to get the new gasket to locate in just the right place. Sometimes I put a couple of tiny drops of superglue on gaskets to locate them before final fitting to hold them in position. Then again, you sometimes get a gasket which hasn't deformed at all and fits perfectly without needing any fiddling, but more often than not the long side runs of material warp , twist or bend during storage.
There's no reason to worry about disturbing the head gasket when all you need to replace is the rocker gasket.

Rocker cover cap
Hello, I am new to the forums, and had a question on a rocker cover cap I just purchased from minispares for my 1966 Austin Cooper S. I am wondering about the best way to fix this to the rocker cover I have. I have the slanted type.Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks, Ron J.
I also wanted to introduce myself to the forums:
I own a 1966 Austin Mini S(featured in oct. issue of miniworld), I frequent the minimania forums regularly, and will be stopping by here more often. I also own a 1965 TR4A, and a 1965 Spitfire(still awaiting restoration). Thanks, Ron J.

Not sure, but you might find more help via the 'Mini Cooper Register' forum.
They'll have all the answers for the original Mini Cooper S.

Shouldve made myself cleare, it was a monza flip top rocker cap. I just drilled a hole, and used a set screw.

Rocker cover valve?
Hey i bought my austin mini last night, i picked it up from luton on planned on driving it home to cambridge.
After getting halfway home there was a loud rattling/ticking noise coming from the engine bay so i pulled over and as soon as i put my foot on the clutch then engine died.
I called my breakdown cover and the guy told me it sounds like its the 'rocker cover valve' either broken or loose.
is this an easy fix? and does it sound like its the problem?
Cheers Scott

It sounds like you may have a broken or stuck valve. You'll need to get under the bonnet and have a look round. First thing, take the plugs out and see if you can turn the engine over on the starter motor. It should blow petrol/air out of each plug hole. See if you can see the pistons moving up and down inside the bores as well. Then take the rocker cover off and watch the arms move up and down as the engine turns. If there's any nasty noises whilst doing this, then you've got a problem.

Vented Rocker Cover
Hello,
I would like to know If anyone can explain, if is any advantage for racing engine to fit one of this engine cover?
Also, if I use the standard Rocker Cover, can I fit High Lift Roller Rockers (1.5)? Or I may not get enough clearance.
thank you

MG Metro type rocker cover
I'm sure that some one has already asked this, but...
Does the MG Metro type rocker cover fit over the 1.5 ratio roller rockers, I'm quite capable with a dremil if a little work is needed.
I really need to know that there is enough metal to work with

Spi Tappet Problem
when installing 1.5 rocker the gap increases per rata as the rocker ratio is higher you increase the gap by .25 so gap goes from 0.012" to 0.015". Now your noise is probably the rockers hitting the rocker cover which cover are you using as most std covers end up hitting the olny one that dont is the mini spares ones. As for only being in 1st and 2nd well with out sittin in the car its anyones guess.
