I is correct it will light up when tere is a malfunktion on the brakes. Om some cars, not mini, the light will go red when the brakepads are worn out. I believe on minies it only gives alarm (lights up) when the brake fluid level is low. jan

Brake system check switch
Im currently re-wiring my 1981 1275GT mini I bought a couple of months back. Im winning so far apart from the brake system check switch. How do you check to see if the brake system check switch works? Is the light meant to come on if there is a problem or if every thing is okay? Any help greatly appreciated Paul

brake light switch.
Hi all. Ive got a late 1983 mini sprite with servo brakes. Just last night the brake lights stopped working. Checked all fuses and bulbs no problem. As it was pitch black and without a torch I couldnt see to find the brake light switch. Where would i be looking for it? Qould it be an hydraulic or mechanical? and where abouts would I find an hydraulic and is it easy to get too? Is it an under the car job or from over the top? Many thanks for all advice. Tim.

It's supposed to light up red when held closed (it's a monetary switch so won't stay closed on its own). This is to test that if the brake fluid should leak this will light up.
In reality all it tests is if the bulb works, which in your case it looks like it doesn't. Check the blub inside the switch and for loose/missing connections.

Brake failure switch
Sorry if thers allready is a thread about this.
what exactly does the brake switch do? When i press it nothing happens, either with ignition on or of nor the car running.
i assume it would light up when i press it and ther's low on brake fluid but thats just what i assume.
the car i have is a rover -97.
Thanks

Normally, all that switch does is check that the lamp works - it's not checking the brake fluid level, that circuit is live all the time the ignition is on. You will need to remove the switch, clean the contacts and if necessary replace the little bulb inside

So, in other words, it does nothing?
could still be fun having the light work tho :) thanks for the answer :)

Hi Daniel,
Pressing the button tests the warning circuit and lets you know that the bulb is ok.
Ideally you should do this at least once per day unless you aren't using the car. If you do it as the same time as the brake system static test to check the servo then it is a good habit to get into.
(sit in car with ignition off, press brake pedal several times to vent the servo vacuum then hold the brake pedal down and start the engine. If the servo is working correctly you should feel the brake pedal move away a little bit more and then stop. it tests that you have a functional servo - that the diaphragm hasn't split)
If the brake fluid level drops while the car is in use the sensor in the cap will illuminate the warning switch.

brake light switch
Brake lights not working, bought new switch lights work until the switch is secured in the brake pedal bracket. Checked that the plunger is able to move when installed but the brake lights don't work. Took the switch off and operated the switch and the lights work ok, any ideas what is going on.
Sorry just realised this should be in the classic mini section.

Brake lights not working, thought it was probably the switch. Bought new switch, the lights work until the switch is installed in the brake pedal bracket. Checked that the plunger is free to move when installed but still lights don't work.Removed the switch several times and operated by hand and the lights work ok. Don't understand what's going on. Anyone any ideas.

Brake test switch on classic mini 1275gt
Hi. I have a rocker switch in the four switch cluster but it doesn’t appear to do anything if pushed on and off.
How does this work and what does it do?
Posted: Dec 03, 2020 08:37 PM
The switch is simply there so that you can check that the red warning light in the top of the switch is working. Clearly yours isn't. The warning light is connected to the low fluid level switch in the master brake cylinder.

Brake light problems!!!
I wonder if any 1 cud help, ive got a 1979 mini only recently got it all working fine till the other day when the brake lights stopped working. there is no brake lights when braking but they are on when lights are turned on. I have checked the obvious by making sure the correct bulbs are being used which they are, ive been told that it could be the micro switch under the brake pedal or the switch in the master cylinder. any ideas????

Does anyone know the answer to this one?????
Brake failure switch, why take it off? if the switch has sheared you need professional help from a competent person. Why do you say you need to bleed brakes?(do you have drums at the front?) have you adjusted the brakes properly? to bleed brakes have the car on axle stands for ease of access, begin by bleeding the farthest from the master cylinder (NSR) then (OSR) move to the front (NSF then OSF) keep checking the master cylinder level.
